Anguilla - An·guil·la  (Pronounciation)
Population:  13,677 (July 2007 est.)

Anguilla is found in the Eastern Caribbean directly east of Puerto Rico and North of islands such as St. Maarten/St. Martin, St. Kitts and Antigua.

Geographic coordinates:
18 15 N, 63 10 W

The island was settled by the British and Africans in the 17th Century and was administered by Great Britain until the early 19th century, when the island was incorporated into a single British dependency, along with Saint Kitts and Nevis against the will of Anguillians. In 1967 Anguilla seceded unilaterally from the union in what is known as The Anguilla Revolution. Following an invasion by the British in 1969 the secession was recognized by the British in 1971 and formalised in 1980 with Anguilla becoming a separate British dependency

Economy

Aside from its people, the beautiful island has few natural resources. The economy is heavily dependent on luxury tourism, offshore banking and lobster fishing. In recent years economic growth has been fueled by growth in the construction sector, which is directly related to increased activity in the tourism industry

Overall the economy is reliant on that of industrialized countries and on the tropical weather conditions..

Famous Quote:

"This feeling for their island, this sense of home, makes Anguillians unusual among Caribbean peoples. The land has been theirs immemorially; no humiliation attaches to it" V.S.Naipaul
