CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRoque led his CARICOM Secretariat Staff in taking vaccine shots from 100 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine provided by Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados from her country's supply of 100,000 doses received from India in February.

The Office of the Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas announced on Friday March 5th, 2021, that the island nation would receive its first batch of COVID-19 vaccines on Sunday 7 March. The office further highlighted that this first batch was a donation from the Government of India of 20,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is also known as the Covishield vaccine.

The vaccines were pre-qualified by the World Health Organization (WHO) and received Emergency Use Listing (EUL) approval by the WHO. The vaccines have also received certification from the Caribbean Regulatory System (CRS).

This batch is part of a commitment from India to donate a total of 500,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries.

Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Dr. Hubert Minnis thanked the Government of India for the donation on behalf of the Bahamian Government and the people of The Bahamas. He is expected to provide a live update on the rollout of this first batch of vaccines on Sunday 7 March at 5pm. The address will be aired live on ZNS Ch. 211 and local TV stations, and live streamed on the Office of the Prime Minister’s Facebook page, @opmbs.
